The Anonymous Client – What young attorney wouldn’t be delighted to get a $10,000 cash retainer in the mail? Steve Winslow might have been if he knew who sent it. As it is, it gets him arrested for murder, grilled by the cops, and hauled before the grand jury. And he still doesn’t know who his client is.

I found this refreshingly dry, droll and elusive book a brilliant study into what must be described as a most unusual law practice, alarmingly difficult to put down. The concept of having an anonymous client, and the intricacies that such a person imposes on those who believe they are that persons lawyer, eventually come to life in a well scripted court room drama, where, that which a lawyer most needs to know, i.e. who his client is and what that clients instructions are, emerge from the extremely tense drama of marital misfeasance, unexpected deaths, and even more unexpected deaths when the private eye who is also the lawyer, is put in ethically impossible positions by his adversary's and the court make for exquisite reading for a lawyer who must have an extraordinary and detailed knowledge of the law of legal professional privilege and 'client ' confidentiality (very hard if your client is anonymous). It has the usual completely unexpected conclusion: a rare book well worth the read by lovers of really good crime fiction.Product details

The Anonymous Client Steve Winslow Mystery Book 2 edition by Parnell Hall Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
The plot got way too convoluted for my simple mind at 9 at night looking for a way to fall asleep. It felt like the author was trying to give Della Street, Perry Mason and the like a new life. Neither the private dick nor finger polishing secretary added to the story.
I had read the reviews prior to ordering the book and have discovered they most have been talking about some other book.
The anonymous part was interesting, but the author's attempt to imitate a Perry Mason courtroom drama falls a bit flat. The story-line only works by implying extremely negligent investigative efforts by the police, which is not fully believable. Cramming several significant events into an extremely short time interval may be technically feasible, but stretches credibility. A pleasant read but no masterpiece.
Rivating...you can't put this book down... from beginning to end. I read some of parnell hall's puzzle lady's books years ago. My memory thinks they were a little tamer than this series. Am glad this is on my kindle so I don't loss track of any more of his page turning books. I can't see anyone not keeping this book after reading it. I know I'll be rereading this book again before long.

This #2 in a series can stand alone as a novel - but reading #1 first gives the reader a deeper insight into the characters involved. The author has a rather disconcerting and superfluous habit of having characters repeating information to each other that the reader already knows!
The author's vivid imagination creates a kinda convoluted and involved plot but you can suspend your credibility filter for the sake of the story.
Steve Winslow, an out of work lawyer gets a letter in the post which is not
signed but contains ten one thousand dollar bills. Winslow also employs a
secretary, Tracy Garvin who does not have much to do and is very bored so
she hands in her notice. She gets very excited as the plot thickens surrounding
the money and forgets that she has handed in her notice. Throw in a murder and
a courtroom scene and you have the makings of a good story where any one could be
the murderer. Worth the read.
Thanks to 's promotion of inexpensive older books, I have taken chances on buying many books by authors who are new to me and have had great luck with nearly all of them. I like to know ahead of time the pros and cons of the books as reviewed by others and have bought these books on the basis of their very descriptive and helpful reviews.
I love courtroom mysteries and legal thrillers and was delighted to discover the Parnell Hall novels. I started with "The Anonymous Client" and, right from the beginning, I was engaged with the main character, Steve, his way of thinking and his antics. It was a real "Who done it?" novel detailing how Steve and his team went about solving a crime, a light mystery with no grizzly murder scenes. This book was delightful all the way through. I will be buying all of his books for sure.
I might have liked this one better had I not recently read The Baxter Trust, the first in the series. I was dismayed that it contained so many of the elements of the first book. I understand the necessity of having the new client tied to the one in the previous book, but two young heiresses and two victims engaged in blackmail and dying exactly the same way was a bit much. Mr. Hall's style is fun and easy to read, and Steve Winslow is a great protagonist. However, the courtroom scenes, while entertaining, are grossly unrealistic, and a bit more imagination in crafting the next case will go a long way in encouraging me to continue the series. A little proofreading would also be appreciated. Among the other errors, an attorney says, "with malice of forethought, " when it should be, "malice aforethought. " An attorney would know that.
